Case Study: Developing Leadership and Appraisal Systems with Wintle-Camp Coaching

Lynne Stephens is an HR leader at Optima Contracting, a construction company that has significantly grown over the past nine years. The company, which focuses on manufacturing and construction, historically prioritised health and safety training but lacked leadership development and soft skills training for its managers and staff.

Challenges

Before engaging Wintle-Camp Coaching, Optima Contracting faced several challenges:

The Development Process

Optima Contracting partnered with Wintle-Camp Coaching after a recommendation from CITB, and the collaboration has since evolved into a long-term relationship. We worked closely with Lynne to understand the company’s needs and develop tailored programs.

  1. Leadership Training: We helped Optima create a bespoke leadership development program based on CITB’s management training modules. This involved curating content on handling difficult situations, improving leadership styles, and creating a more cohesive management team. The program has already successfully run for two cohorts, with plans for a third in the near future.

  2. Cross-Departmental Collaboration: The leadership program also brought managers from different locations together. As a result, managers from various regions, including Scotland, Somerset, and Manchester, had the opportunity to share knowledge and experiences, fostering a sense of unity across the business.

Appraisal Training: As part of a wider initiative to overhaul the company’s appraisal process, we designed a new training program focused on meaningful conversations and feedback rather than the traditional tick-box approach. We emphasised the importance of listening, feedback, and engagement during performance reviews, helping to shift the company’s culture toward a more developmental and supportive environment.
